چکیده

The classic neurophysiologic definition of consciousness distinguishes between 2 components, namely vigilance (or arousal) and awareness. Vigilance corresponds to the level of wakefulness, whereas awareness refers to the mental content, which in turn is composed of 2 components being conscious perception of the environment or external world (external awareness) and of our inner world and self-awareness encompassing inner speech, mental imagery, and thoughts (internal awareness). The level of vigilance depends on the tonic excitatory influence of cholinergic, noradrenergic, histaminergic, serotonergic, and

P 154: The Role of Inflammation in the Seizure Occurrence

Most common hypotheses of seizure initiation are increased neural excitation, decreased inhibition or both. But, the conditions that lead to these activation states not to be clear yet. Recent studies challenge traditional concepts and indicate new evidence that a key epileptogenic process may actually begin in the blood vessel. Seizures could be initiate by a variety of insults to the brain, s...

Intrinsic brain activity in altered states of consciousness: how conscious is the default mode of brain function?

Spontaneous brain activity has recently received increasing interest in the neuroimaging community. However, the value of resting-state studies to a better understanding of brain-behavior relationships has been challenged. That altered states of consciousness are a privileged way to study the relationships between spontaneous brain activity and behavior is proposed, and common resting-state bra...

Catecholamine Contents of Different Region of Adult Rat Brain Are Altered Following Short and Long-term Exposures to Pb+2

Catecholamine is a group of neurotransmitters that is believed to be responsible for the normal function of animal brain. Physiological and behavioral changes of human body have been reported due to the damage of the brain function following lead exposure. Due to the assumption of lead disposal in brain tissue with two year for its half-life, which results in alteration of brain function, we in...

Mental Unity, Altered States of Consciousness and Dissociation

This model for understanding altered states of consciousness and dissociation is based on the hypothesis that normal consciousness depends on an illusion of mental unity generated by certain dynamic brain processes. 1i7ren these processes are altered and the illusion o/ mental unit_y is lost, the individual experiences an altered state o/ consciousness in which normal consciousness is latent or...
